What is People to People?
The program, founded by President Eisenhower in 1956 promotes international understanding while building leadership skills among America’s youth. He believed that if people from different cultures could come together in peace and friendship, so eventually would nations. Students are given the opportunity to develop leadership skills as well as a global awareness while earning high school and college credit. Students can be accepted into the program beginning in 5th grade through high school.
What is a Student Ambassador?
Student Ambassadors represent their school, community, state, and country while traveling abroad. They learn about other cultures, engage in fun activities, and meet local citizens. Student Ambassadors come from diverse backgrounds, but share common traits: a curious and adventurous spirit, an open mind and heart, the desire to learn about other cultures and people, and the belief in President Eisenhower’s vision that each person can make a difference and help to achieve peace through understanding.
How do I become a Student Ambassador?
All students who apply to the program are interviewed and submit three letters of recommendation before acceptance. Once on their program, Student Ambassadors are expected to create a positive impression of our country and culture, whether making a good impression in a school visit overseas, meeting local citizens, or attending a briefing with a government representative. This diplomatic spirit is one of the things that sets the People to People experience apart; our Student Ambassadors are global students and teachers of their own culture.
